Friday Focus - September 13th

This Week at Blanche Sims:

Parent Involvement

It was so nice to see so many of our parents and families brave the rain and attend Curriculum Night on Wednesday evening.  We love parent involvement!  Volunteering, chaperoning field trips, PTO, after school activities, eating lunch with your children,……are all great opportunities to become involved in your child’s school and education.  Always remember, we want to see you at Blanche Sims!  If you demonstrate that school is important to you, school will be important to your children!

PLEASE DON’T BE TARDY! School Hours: 8:50 a.m.-3:50 p.m.

Consistent and punctual attendance is vitally important for student growth. Students who are tardy often have a very difficult time catching up the rest of the day. Often times, even the slightest time being tardy can throw your student and their classmates off for a much longer period of time. To set your child up for success, please try and have children to school on time. Plan on dropping your children off at 8:30 a.m.!  If you are dropping them off at 8:50, they are late!

Picture Day Tuesday, September 17

Picture day is Tuesday, September 17. The picture forms and information were sent home with your children the first week of school.  Make sure your children return the form with money on Tuesday, the day of pictures.  If you need another form, you can pick one up in the main office.  If you are choosing not to purchase a picture package, your child’s picture will still be taken for the Blanche Sims yearbook.  You can order and make payment online at www.kaiserstudio.com using the school ID Code BLANCHE2019.

For any questions or concerns, contact the main office or Kaiser Studio directly: (248) 619-9119.

Help Us and Your Child at Drop Off

For some of our littlest one’s, and parents, morning drop off can be traumatic and nerve racking.  Now that we are headed into the third week of school, it is time to allow your child to make this step on their own.  We ask you to help your child learn to be a bit more independent by allowing them to enter the building on their own.  No parent should be entering the building and walking their children to their classroom.  This is sometimes a difficult step to take as a parent, but it’s an important milestone for the child. All school age children should be able to leave parents at the door when entering the building.  If you and your child need help with this important step, we are happy to help.  NO PARENT SHOULD ENTER BLANCHE SIMS WITHOUT SIGNING IN AT THE MAIN OFFICE.  This includes during drop off and pick up.  We all thank you for helping to keep our school safe!

So What is a Code Yellow?

From time-to-time you may hear your children talk about a “Code Yellow” alert that was announced over the school PA system. So what is a Code Yellow?  A Code Yellow is one of several types of emergency procedures that can take place in school for many reasons.  When there is a Code Yellow, all students are asked to simply stay in the supervised room they are in.  Although a Code Yellow can be called for many reasons, they are most commonly called during a medical emergency when a student needs attention in a hallway or common area.  Calling a Code Yellow keeps kids out of the hallways while the medical emergency is addressed by the staff or by medical professionals.  Once the medical emergency is resolved, the “All Clear” message is announced.  If you hear that a Code Yellow was called, don’t worry, everyone is safe at all times.  If you ever have a concern, feel free to contact the main office and/or Mr. Nuss for more details.

  • We highly encourage that all birthday treats be nonfood items.  If an edible treat is provided, it must be pre-packaged and store purchased with ingredient list (on each treat). Edible treats will be sent home rather than eaten in the classroom.
  • Homemade birthday treats WILL NOT BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS, even if pre-packaged.
  • Snacks to be eaten in the classroom CANNOT contain peanuts or tree nuts.
  • Each student with an epinephrine auto-injector MUST have a severe allergy Medical Action Plan (MAP) specific to them and signed by their physician and parent/guardian, giving instructions on what to do if the student has an allergic reaction. Call Debbie in the main office with questions or concerns.

Student Safety and Security

To maintain safety, we must insist that all parents and visitors sign-in at the front office after being “buzzed in” and get your visible sticker. Please DO NOT walk in the halls or to any classroom without signing in at the main office. All visitors must sign-out in the main office as well when leaving the building and use the front doors only to exit. Do not exit the building through side exit doors.  It is critical that we always know who is in our building and where at all times.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!  Volunteers needed!

The circus is coming to Blanche Sims! This Wednesday, June 12 the entire school will participate in a Cirque Amongus circus project with a performance by all students at the end. We need a large number (120 in total) of volunteers (age 18 & up) for the full school day to help make this event possible. As a volunteer you will help the students learn circus skills such as juggling, acrobatics, tight-wire and trapeze and assist them in putting together the show. Due to space restrictions, we will not be able to accommodate visitors who are not volunteers on the day of this event. If you haven’t signed up yet and would like to, please e-mail Erica at Erica.lentz@att.net.

Get a jump start on school supplies for next year. Supply Kits can be ordered online at www.shopttkits.com, account # 12740. Everything your student will need for next year is in a convenient box and will be delivered to Blanche Sims at the Teacher Meet & Greet in the fall. Orders are due by 6/21/19.

Important Message from Food Service

The Food Service Department would like to notify all parents and guardians that students will no longer be able to purchase food from the cafeteria without the proper funds.  The federal government which oversees the School Meals Program requires that all meal debts are collected and paid in full before the end of the school year. Your student’s meal account balance is available online by logging onto sendmoneytoschool.com or by calling the Food Service Office at (248) 814-0201. Thank you for your understanding.

Summer Reading Extremely Important

Summer is a wonderful time of year for everyone; unfortunately, it can really be an obstacle to student growth, especially in reading.  As is the case with most skills, the old saying of “use it or lose it”, really rings true when it comes to reading.  As children learn the skill of reading, they often have what educators refer to as “the summer slide” during the long break.  In other words, significant gains made during the school year in reading are often lost due to the lack of reading during the summer.  So how do you keep kids reading at their best?  By reading!  Please help your children and us by finding a few good books to read during the summer.  It is critical that students continue working on the skills they learned during the school year during the summer.  The summer can be a great time to “dive into a good book!”  Try having your child read 20 minutes before bed each night.  The same is also true of math facts!!

2019 Summer Skills Sharpener Sign Up Soon!

Lake Orion’s Elementary Skills Sharpener Program is designed to keep skills sharp over the summer and to limit summer learning loss. Students will be engaged in a variety of fun activities as an extension of the curriculum from their recently completed grade.  Please consider having your child attend.

Let’s Golf for a Great Cause

The LOEF (Lake Orion Educational Foundation) is once again sponsoring its Annual Golf Outing Fundraiser to support education in the Lake Orion Community Schools.  This year’s outing will take place at Devils Ridge Golf Club on June 25.  All money raised goes directly to our classrooms in the form of grants to support instruction.  Please consider being a sponsor or participant in this fun event!
