What's the impact of one student-led conference? It can mean the world when it comes to saving lives.
On February 8, Lake Orion High School students hosted peers from their own school and others from across Oakland County (Bloomfield Hills, Clarkston, Troy, Ferndale) to discuss mental health. Administrators, teachers and other students drew lessons to bring back to their schools to support their own students.
The purpose was to share the program with other schools in the county. Students Offering Support is an LOHS student-led organization that provides student-led initiatives to build and maintain positive connections with one another and promote healthy mindsets.
The SOS team focuses on:
**breaking down the barriers and stigmas of mental health challenges
**providing peer-to-peer support
**helping students decrease the use of unhealthy living styles
The conference featured a large-group opening with a speaker who has battled personal mental health issues and then broke down into smaller groups where different exercises were shared to help create comfort and openness to share.
The Oakland Press and Fox2 visited and shared the conference's impact.
