Poet Phillip Van Wagoner to Virtually Collaborate with LOCS Elementary Students

Poet Phillip Van Wagoner to Virtually Collaborate with LOCS Elementary Students

This week’s elementary home learning plans feature a special option in the Media section.

The Lake Orion Community Schools media specialists collaborated with author Phillip Van Wagoner to create a poetry submission opportunity for all LOCS elementary school students.

All students will have the chance to send a poem of their choosing to the author, and select student poems will be featured on the first episodes of a new YouTube series called Poet, Show It!

He took a few minutes to explain the reason why he wants to make the show.

“We often consider a 'poet' someone who has a unique gift (and many undoubtedly do) but poetry is universal," Van Wagoner said. "As a way to share our feelings, our favorite things, and our sense of humor, poetry is available to all of us. My hope is that Poet, Show It! will give young poets (and we’re ALL poets) a chance to shine and share their perspective on the world.”

Van Wagoner is no stranger to Lake Orion. Four years ago, after the release of his first poetry book Could You Hug a Cactus, he visited Stadium Drive and Orion Oaks to share his passion of poetry with students. The past three years, Phil has collaborated virtually with the second grade teachers and students at Stadium Drive on their original poetry, something he calls his “favorite day of the year.”

With physical school buildings closed, and author visits impossible, Phillip (in collaboration with staff at Stadium Drive) saw both a need and an opportunity.

“Our schools are feedback-rich environments," he said. "In my mind, one of the biggest challenges of staying safe at home is the loss of feeling impactful. The poems the students at Stadium Drive have shared with me over the past three years have always had an impact, so kicking off the series with the students of Lake Orion feels like a natural extension of our ongoing collaboration.”

He hopes Poet, Show It! will inspire young Lake Orion students to develop a love of writing and sharing their poetry. Every poem submitted by Friday, May 22, will be read by Phillip Van Wagoner and the first episodes will be dedicated to celebrating poetry from Lake Orion students.

You can find the video call for submissions HERE.

The first episodes of Poet, Show It! will launch the last week of May. Tune in to see many of the amazing poets we have right here in Lake Orion!
