LOHS Offers Flexible Scheduling Option for 2020-21

2018 LOHS Graduation

Lake Orion High School is continuously seeking innovative methods to improve our students’ experiences. Offering additional academic options, centered around researched-based best practices, drives many of those decisions. High school students benefit from school-schedule flexibility, evidenced in the well documented concept that many teenagers succeed when their school day begins later.

In order to offer additional flexibility to our students, LOHS will present a new flexible class-schedule option in the 2020-2021 school year. This program will offer eligible students the choice to delay the start of most “regular” school days until approximately 9 a.m. (missing the normal first class period), and enroll in a “5th period” course from approximately 2:40 p.m. until shortly after 4 p.m.  Students who elect this option would still attend school for the same total amount of time as all other students, but would simply attend this “5th period” as a substitute for first period.

This option will be limited, available only in certain courses and open only to students in grades 11 and 12 during the 2020-21 school year who are able to provide their own transportation. Students also need to consider after school commitments such as activities/athletics participation, part-time jobs, Oakland Schools Technical Center schedule requirements, etc. before participating.  Not all students will find this schedule as a viable option.

During the normal February scheduling process, interested students should select the specific course offerings for a 5th period.  This will appear on the online course request planner used by all LOHS students.  Students may also designate a specific term or semester for the 5th period in order to work around seasonal athletics or activities.  A sufficient number of students must request a course for implementation.

Students or parents with questions regarding this program should contact the Lake Orion High School counseling offices at (248) 693-5420.
