Unified Basketball Focuses on Inclusion, Integration, and Participation

Unified Sports

For the first time, Lake Orion High School has an interscholastic Unified Sports basketball team.

Unified Sports

Unified Sports is a branch of Special Olympics. The purpose is described on the Special Olympics Unified Sports website, which states, "Special Olympics is dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding."

The team is Co-Ed and provides equal opportunities for both girls and boys. The Dragons will be competing against other high school teams in the Oakland County area. Students will train as a team and will be bussed to their weekly games. Players will have the opportunity to compete on the same courts as their same age peers. The Special Olympics Unified Basketball program utilizes the same rules accepted by the MHSAA for high school basketball.
