National Geography Bee

National Geography Bee

Each year Scripps Middle School participates in the National Geographic Bee.  This entails a number of steps.  All Social Studies teachers first held their classroom bees the week of 1/7/19.  Each team then held team bees consisting of their classroom winners, the week of 1/14/19.  The Social Studies teachers submitted their team winners to Scripps' Geo Bee Coordinator (Mrs. Kathy Mundie).  The school bee was then held on Tuesday, 1/22/19, with four Social Studies teachers assuming various roles (Ms. Perry, Mrs. Cerny, Mrs. Griswold, and Mrs. Mundie).  We had six contestants, each representing one of our six teams from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  Our finalists included:  Bobby A. (6G), Riya K. (6W),  Ethan M. (7G),  Daniel L. (7W), Connor M. (8G), and Paavo N. (8W).   Our winners were:  Ethan M. (1st place), Connor M. (2nd place), and Paavo N. (3rd place).  Ethan goes on to take the state qualifying test by 2/1/19.  The 100 best scores for the state are invited to participate in the state bee on 3/29/19.  Each state's winner will be invited to participate in the National Geographic Bee in Washington D.C. on 5/19/19 - 5/22/19.  Scholarships are also awarded at this level.

Note:  Scripps Middle School has had three students qualify to participate in the state bee in the last ten years.  This is an amazing accomplishment, as they had one of the top scores among 100 school finalists in Michigan.
