Nick Coccia has deep roots in Lake Orion Community Schools.
A former student at Waldon Middle School and Lake Orion High School, now he has spent the past 12 years as a teacher in the district.
So it was a touching moment on Tuesday when he was honored as LOCS' Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2018-19.
"It's great to hear the really positive things because we don't really take time to recognize what each and every one of these (teachers) are doing," Coccia said, in his understated way. "Everybody's doing really great things and it's nice to get positive feedback."
Coccia, who is also a district cross country coach, is a seventh-grade math teacher and universally loved by his colleagues. Their raves are what made the decision easy for Waldon principal Randy Groya.
A two-time graduate of Michigan State University, Coccia has a bachelor's degree in math and a master's in K-12 administration and has worked at Oakview Middle School, Lake Orion High School and Waldon during his 12 years in the district.
