MLK Day Celebration 2022

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday will be celebrated by Lake Orion Community Schools as a video presentation with contributions from across the district.

Leading up to that event, the LOCS Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is sponsoring contests leading up to the LOCS Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and encourages all LOCS students to participate.

Who: Contests are open to all LOCS students.

Divisions include:

• Elementary - K-5
• Middle School - 6 - 8
• High School - 9-12
• Post Secondary

What: All contest entries should convey the theme, “Joy in Service” and “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve, you only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love,” -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Contest Options: Short Essay, Poetry, Multi-Media (no longer than 2 minutes), and Artwork

Requirements: Typed or handwritten work and artwork must include a title and be original.

Carefully package artwork and give to your building collector noted below. Digital files submitted by email.

Entries must be submitted to:

• Elementary - classroom teacher
• Middle School - STAR teacher
• High School- Marie McDonald (marie.mcdonald@lok12.org)
• Learning Options- Jennifer Smith (jennifer.smith@lok12)
• Post Secondary- Jennifer Carpus (jennifer.carpus@lok12.org)

Prizes: Winners from each division will be chosen by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committees in each building.

Students from each division will win:

• A prize from the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) District Committee
• Recognition by their Principal, District, and District DEI Committee

• Winners will be invited to read/share their essay, poem, multi-media presentation, or artwork on our video celebration.

In celebration of MLK, the LOHS DEI Committee is holding a drive to help support the works of HUMBLE DESIGN, an organization that furnishes the homes of families and veterans emerging from homelessness – over 2,128 furnished since 2009! To learn more, visit humbledesign.org.
