Home Learning Update (May 12, 2020)
May 12, 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope this communication finds you and your family healthy. I would like to thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. There are many areas to consider during the pandemic and our priority remains the mental and physical well-being of our students and families.
Beginning the week of May 18, we will be slightly revising our academic plan. The main purpose for this revision is to ensure that our teaching staff and families are fully prepared should we need to conduct remote teaching and learning in the fall of 2020. The district is planning for several different scenarios for the 2020-2021 school year. We will communicate with families once we are provided direction from the Michigan Department of Education and the Governor’s office.
Secondary teachers (grades 6-12) will be meeting with students via Zoom or Microsoft Teams following the schedules below. The times listed are ranges in which teachers will conduct their meetings. Teacher meetings will range from 30-40 minutes for grades 6-12. These meetings are optional for students; however, strongly encouraged.

Academic Plan for Grades 9-11
Academic Plan for Grades 9-11
Dear LOHS Parents (Grades 9, 10, 11):
By now, you know that due to an executive order from Governor Whitmer, schools are closed for the remainder of this school year due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Please know that at LOHS, we understand the tremendous impact that this has on our students, in terms of grades, spring sports, activities such as the spring musical, and in countless other ways. Please be assured that LOHS has been working hard to determine the best possible outcomes for our students given the significant challenges that we face in these circumstances. Please read below for critical information.
Grades
Lake Orion High School has determined that it is in the best interest of our students to grant credit for passing grades (A, B, C, or D grades) in their Term 3 “block” classes as indicated in PowerSchool.
Students can complete work assigned between April 20 and June 10 to benefit their grades; this work will only help their grades, but not harm them. While “block” (ex: 1A-1B) classes will focus on Term 3 curriculum, “skinny” (ex: 1B) classes will cover material from both Terms 3 and 4.
Students will be assigned the letter grade in each of their classes as indicated in PowerSchool after Wednesday, June 10. Students may still work with their teachers until that time to complete missing work, redo certain assignments or assessments, etc.
Students will be given the option to take the grade earned in each class which is calculated in the student’s GPA or a Pass/Fail which is recorded as credit or no credit and not calculated into the student’s GPA. LOHS will indicate on student transcripts that classes with “Pass/Fail” are due to the COVID-19 crisis.
Students who would like to receive letter grades in all their Term 3 classes do not need to do anything. Students wishing to receive one or more “Pass/Fail” grades should fill out the form at this link by Monday, June 8.
Students who are currently failing a Term 3 class (E grade) should contact their teacher for opportunities to improve their grade.
Students who plan to participate in intercollegiate athletics should choose to receive their letter grades to ensure NCAA eligibility.
Students should also be aware that in some cases, colleges recalculate students’ GPAs and assign a “D” grade to any Pass marks.
Any questions or concerns about this process should be directed to the student’s LOHS counselor (counselor assignments) or LOHS administration (administrator information).
Term 4 and the 2020-21 School Year
Several different models were considered for how to proceed with the 2019-20 Term 4 and the transition to the 2020-21 School Year. Four guiding educational principles shaped the decision:
1) The need to consider the broad range of family circumstances in the LOHS community
2) The need to consider and care for students’ social and emotional circumstances and needs
3) The need to continue to extend academic learning as has been established throughout LOCS
4) The need to keep any plan simple, to reduce or eliminate additional problems created by any solution (to the greatest extent possible)
Term 4 and the Transition to the 2020-21 School Year Plan:
- Counselors will work with student schedules to the greatest extent possible to reschedule Term 4 ’19-’20 courses (except skinnies) to 2020-21, prioritizing core academic classes as early in the school year as possible.
- LOCS is exploring options for offering additional course test-outs and summer course work options.
- LOHS’ modified block schedule allows tremendous flexibility in this scenario, but not all schedules will be perfect. Patience and understanding by all involved parties will be critical to our shared success!
- It is understood that some remediation and review will need to take place at the beginning of the 20-21 school year in many courses.
- Students who requested Honors, Accelerated, and Advanced Placement courses should keep those requests. Teachers will modify instruction in the fall to fit students’ unique learning needs in this situation.
- LOCS plans to adjust the number of credits required for students to graduate for the classes of 2021, ’22, and ’23 due to the loss of Term 4 2019-20.
Test Preparation
The classes of 2021, ’22, and ’23 will take the SAT and PSAT on an as-of-yet unspecified date in the fall of 2020. It is critical that our students are prepared for these college-entrance examinations.
- FREE SAT Prep: We encourage all students to spend several hours every week from now until the beginning of the school year using the FREE online SAT/PSAT Practice provided at www.khanacademy.org/sat.
- COLLEGE BOARD Accounts: Students can login to their College Board account at Khan Academy so that their SAT Practice is customized to fit their own educational needs. Students should contact their LOHS counselor if they need assistance logging in.
- IMPROVEMENT: Studies have shown that students who spend 20 hours on Khan Academy SAT practice improve an average of 115 points on the SAT. Given the loss of instruction this year, it is critical that students take advantage of this resource. More information.
Clarification Notes
- Students will still get work from their 3rd term block classes and have the ability to improve their grade, however their grade will not be penalized based on any new work coming home. The lowest grade they can get is what they had when the building was initially closed on March 13, 2020.
- There is no 4th term this school year. Please refer to the section of the letter titled Term 4 and the 2020-21 School Year for steps we are taking to prepare for next fall based on the lack of a 4th term this spring.
