Military, Trade and Apprenticeship

XELLO

Students complete interactive career, personality, and learning style assessments to help them better understand their unique interests, skills, and strengths. Each engaging assessment encourages reflection, helping students connect who they are with relevant career options. This creates an online portfolio of their interests, skills and abilities that showcase possible careers to them that fit their assessment results.  These results are streamlined into opportunities with the LOHS curriculum to guide them into decision making for possible classes that might meet their goals as all course scheduling is now online through XELLO. 

XELLO also hosts a unique opportunity for our Senior students allowing them to search for scholarships in a national database.

Recruiters for the Air Force, Air Force National Guard, Air Force Space Force, Army, Army National Guard, Marines, Navy, and Navy National Guard actively participate in monthly lunch information tables.  

If a student is interested in a military career, they may come to the Career Center to be put in touch with the military recruiter for the branch they are considering. 

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), a multiple-choice test, used to predict academic and occupational success in the military, helps not just determine whether you are a good fit to join the service, but also which branch you might be best for and even what military jobs you can hold after completing basic training or boot camp. The better the score, the broader the options. The ASVAB test is administered each winter at LOHS. Learn more about the ASVAB and preparing for its administration here. 

All branches of the military participate with the students in Cell Out each year, joining them all day at a Heroes Assembly and hosting informational tables at lunch.

Cell Out 2025

Oakland Community College offers 10 skilled trades programs, including welding, auto, robotics, CAD, HVAC, construction and engineering. OCC admission counselors will be onsite in the fall as part of the visit calendar.  They also visit each spring to help senior students apply or finalize applications to OCC.  To learn more about the programs available at OCC, view their website.

Through a grant from Conduit to the Trades, LOHS hosts an Apprenticeship Program Wall, highlighting 15 in-demand local trades.  Located in Extended Learning Space A, students are able to scan two QR codes of each trade to learn about both the path to apprenticeship and watch a “Day in the Life” video. As anything changes with trades, the information is automatically updated by Conduit to the Trades. 

Trade schools visit LOHS each fall and are part of the onsite admission calendar.  

The apprenticeship coordinator for MUST (Management and Unions Serving Together) speaks to interested students each fall about the process for apprenticeship and trade opportunities. 

Representatives will be scheduled to visit Lake Orion High School in the fall for informational sessions. The procedure is as follows for students wishing to attend informational presentations:

The dates and times of the representative visits are advertised to LOHS Junior and Senior students via the newsletter, LOAM news, email and Instagram.

1.  Students will be able to follow the link provided and then click on their choice to sign up.

2.  Students should input a reminder into their calendars, as a reminder to attend the meeting.

3. On the day of the visit, the students will receive an e-Hall Pass for the visit.  Meetings take place in Extended Learning Space A, outside of the Career Center.

4. Students are responsible for coursework missed while attending the presentation.
