Resumes, Cover Letters, Letters of Recommendations can be over-whelming for anyone, let a lone a high school student. The more one practices these skills, and utilizes the resources available to them, the easier it becomes.

A resume is an important skill that all Students at Lake Orion High School will have the opportunity to create.  They tell a story about who you are and what your objective may be, what your education may be, what your education is, what extracurricular activities you participate(d) in, what your accomplishments may be, etc.  Resumes can change year to year, and sometimes, job to job.  Once you start one, you are on your way! 

Your resume is a way to advertise who you are, and what you have to offer.  Your goal, when writing is a resume, is to get those hiring and Human Resources into wanting to give you an interview.

Think of your resume this way: It’s an advertisement, and you are the product. Your goal is to get hiring managers to buy into what you’re selling — which means giving you an interview.

 Cover letters are letters sent to a potential employer or school to introduce who you are. It is the first document that your employer reads to get to know who you are; it is their first impression of you before a potential interview.    Therefore, it is so important you take the time to craft a letter that is upbeat, tailored to the position you are applying for and free of grammatical errors. 

It is important to read each of your college applications very carefully. Schools often ask for letters of recommendation from an academic teacher — sometimes in a specific subject — or a school counselor or both. Ask a counselor, teachers and your family who they think would make good references.

Letters of recommendation SHOULD NOT BE written by a family member. 

When asking someone to write a letter of recommendation it is important to give them the information they need to write a good letter.
