Work Permits and Jobs

Public Act 90 of 1978, the Youth Employment Standards Act (YESA), as amended, defines a minor who is less than 18 years of age, including but not limited to employees, volunteers, independent contractors and performing artists.

Minors under 18 years of age must obtain a work permit or a written agreement or contract entered into between the employer and the governing school district, public school academy, or nonpublic school before starting work.  Work permits can be obtained from the state of Michigan school issuing officer (the chief administrator of a school district, intermediate school district, etc.) the minor attends or the school district where the minor will be employed. If the minor changes jobs, a new work permit is required for the new employer.  A work permit may be revoked for poor academic performance. A work permit is required even if the minor is home/cyber/virtual/online schooled, does not attend school, or out-of-state resident.

YESA Standards 

• If the student is 15 and under, they will fill out the CA-6 work permit; the permit must have both the application on the front and the directions on the back. Student must fill out their portion, in INK, including the last four digits of their SSN.  Employer must also have their portion filled out COMPLETELY, BEFORE the school can finalize the application. Student must bring in ORIGINAL document to the school.
   
• If the student is 16-17, they will use the CA-7 work permit; the permit must have both the application on the front and the directions on the back.  Student must fill out their portion, in INK, including the last four digits of their SSN.  Employer must also have their portion filled out COMPLETELY, BEFORE the school can finalize the application. Student must bring in ORIGINAL document to the school.

Please note, the most up-to-date work permits are revised as of 4/2021 and may be printed on white paper.  

1. Please be sure to obtain the appropriate work permit based on age from your employer, online below, in the main office or Career Center at Lake Orion High School. 

        Form CA-6 for minors under 16 years of age 

         Form CA-7 for minors 16 and 17 years of age

2. Student will fill out the first section of the work permit completely, in BLUE OR BLACK INK, including the last four digits of the student's SSN. 

3. Employer will fill out the second section, completely.  Make sure it is done in INK PEN and every box is complete.

4. Once the 1st and 2nd sections are filled out, the student must request a signature from a School Issuing Officer in the Career Center or Main Office.   

5. If LOHS or the school district are closed or on a holiday break, Work Permits are not able to be signed!

Seniors seeking to obtain full time employment, must request a letter of successful high school completion before becoming full-time.  Again, students are still considered “in school”.  Therefore, any senior having completed all of Lake Orion Community Schools' Graduation Requirements MUST request a verification letter from the Career Center.
